In an effort to raise funds for needy children, Zenazi Ndinani Organisation (ZNO) from Langa will host its third annual Fundraising Walk in Langa on Monday 10 August. Participants will walk 6,7 km, within the area.
The route
The walk will start in Makana Street, proceed via Xolile Mosie Street through Brinton and Back Stage, Larotholi Avenue, Mendi Street, past Mosheshe Street via Sigacwu, joining Jungle Walk Street via Dr Langalibalele, and back to Makana Street where it began. It will take place from 07:00 to 12:00.
ZNO is a non-profit organisation that supports children from disadvantaged communities with school shoes and uniforms.
Honouring a hero
The founder of the organisation, Heidi Ngumbela, said the event will mark the 50th anniversary of Xolile Mosie who was shot and killed during the 1976 student uprisings in the area.
“We used to align our fundraising with Mandela Day,” said Ngumbela. “But this year we decided to commemorate Xolile Mosie, who died in the Langa Massacre of 1976. We call it 50 Years of Grace Footprint. We also invited local early-childhood development centres [ECDs] to participate.”
Prizes and participation
She said this year more than 150 people were expected to participate, including children aged 3 upwards, and the first three people to finish the race will receive personalised medals featuring Mosie, even though all participants will receive medals.

“The first child to reach the destination will get a scooter. The tickets are R76, in commemoration of the 1976 student uprisings, the numbers also an inversion of 67, the number of minutes of service people dedicate in memory of Madiba on what would have been his birthday, 18 July. All monies raised will be used to buy school shoes and uniforms for learners of the Noluthando School for the Deaf and Autism in Khayelitsha as well as some children who were born in prison,” Ngumbela said the first 50 people to buy tickets will receive T-shirts and the event will feature music.
