KDF welcomes progress on Khayelitsha Mall renovation

The Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) has expressed satisfaction with the progress being made on the renovation of Khayelitsha Mall. The project, which is being undertaken by the Khayelitsha Community Trust (KCT), is being implemented in two phases.

KDF chairperson Mawande Jara described the renovation as long overdue. He said the project was initially expected to begin two years ago, but internal challenges caused delays.

New shops and restaurant planned in Phase Two

“They are still busy with Phase 1, which includes infrastructure upgrades and the extension of some shops. Phase 1 started six months ago and is expected to be completed next month. Once Phase 1 is completed, they will move on to Phase 2, which will involve a facelift of the mall and the enclosure of the roof. They will also build three additional shops, including a restaurant,” explained Jara, adding that Phase 2 is expected to be completed early next year.

Speaking about the current structure of the mall, Jara said it was unfortunate that it had been built in its current form from the outset. He stated that what the community had expected to be a mall was instead developed as a shopping centre.

Jara said the renovation project aimed to correct the mistakes of the past.

He vowed that the upgraded facility would meet high standards and accommodate the same range of retail stores found in other malls.

Local labour benefits from mall renovation

Jara stated that KDF has ensured that 80% of subcontractors and labourers involved in the project come from Khayelitsha. Only specialised skills are being sourced from outside the area.

He highlighted that crime remained the biggest obstacle to development in Khayelitsha and there were plans in place to address the problem.

Crime remains a challenge to development in Khayelitsha

“Khayelitsha will never fully develop if crime continues to thrive. Extortion is one of the biggest challenges facing our communities. We know that these extortionists are not ordinary people; they have resources. But if it requires the full might of the state and its resources to deal with them, then that is what must be done.”

He also expressed his gratitude to the community for their patience and support as the project reaches this important stage.
