Khayelitsha’s Jada spreads love and discipline for yoga in her community

In an attempt to transform the attitude and instil discipline to the community, Nokuphiwo Jada from Khayelitsha is training people in yoga.

The qualified yoga trainer trains people from Khayelitsha and the surrounding areas. She says it is high time for people to know their inner themselves.

Jada has been in the yoga trade for about 20 years. “I was introduced to yoga by the Art of Living organisation, which is based in Cape Town, in 2004. That was where I developed the love for it. Even my family was confused when I told them that I was doing yoga,” she explains.

Jada works for Earth Child Project, a non profit organisation (NPO) based in the province. The project offers complimentary education to under-resourced schools with a focus on the environment, health and self-development.

She says yoga is a career for her and she knows nothing else better than it. “I am a qualified yoga trainer. In 2015, I went to Costa Rica to learn how to teach adults yoga. And in 2018, I went to Thailand to train how to teach children. Yoga is in me,” she says.

For the past 17 years Jada has been working with primary school learners in Khayelitsha and for nine years, teachers.

“I started by training learners from primary schools and later the teachers also joined as well. I have an hour in each school. My classes start at 14:30 until 15:30. On Monday, I’m at Sokumlandela, Tuesday at Ntwasahlobo, Wednesday at Ikhusi, Thursday at Yomelela. On weekends, I have community classes and private classes,” she says, adding that private classes are for families (husband and wife or maybe with children).

She states that her prices are negotiable.

Jada says she has passion for children. She adds that yoga relaxes the body and mind. She says that anyone is welcome to join the sessions.
