Irate residents from A Section in Lingelethu, Khayelitsha, marched to the Lingelethu-West Police Station on Monday 25 May to hand over a memorandum demanding an update on the progress of the investigation into the disappearance of 20-year-old Inga Godongwana.

Godongwana was last seen at about 22:00 on Friday 24 April in Makhaza.

The march started opposite Showco building in Lingelethu and then proceeded to the police station.
When the residents arrived at the station, community leaders went inside to engage with management.

Memorandum handed to Lingelethu-West Police Station

After the meeting, the leaders returned with station management and handed the memorandum to station commander Col Khunjulwa Khanyile. Khanyile welcomed the memorandum and said the officers were doing everything possible to find Inga. She added that the police station is open to the community.

“As the community, you are welcome at the station. There is no need for you to march. You are free to come here,” said Khanyile.

Sanco says residents received answers on the case

Lingelethu, South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) secretary Thumeka Mbombosi addressed residents, saying they had received all the answers they needed. The leadership also discouraged community members from asking questions directly to the station commander.

“We went inside the station, and the management welcomed us with open arms. What we wanted was to know what was happening with Inga’s case, and they informed us. We asked other relevant questions, and they responded, and we are happy with their response,” said Mbombosi.

She added that the last people who were seen with Inga had been questioned and later released by the officers.

Lingelethu-West police open missing persons inquiry

Lingelethu-West spokesperson Sergeant Xoliswa Nyalambisa stated that a missing person inquiry had been opened.
