  • A 27-year-old woman was fatally shot by two unknown suspects in a Toyota Avanza in Gugulethu on Sunday, August 4, sparking a murder investigation.
  • The incident occurred on Women’s Month, leaving the community shocked and traumatized, with a local Sanco leader calling for increased police visibility to monitor the area.
  • The leader reported that similar incidents had occurred in the neighborhood before, including two cases last year where people were shot and killed by perpetrators who came out of vehicles, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.

Gugulethu police are investigating a case of murder following a shooting incident on Sunday 4 August, in which a 27-year-old female was fatally wounded.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the police members attended to a shooting complaint. On their arrival on the scene, they found the victim with gunshot wounds to her body.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. It is alleged that two unknown suspects in a Toyota Avanza approached and shot the victim before fleeing the scene,” he said.

A Sanco leader from KTC, who refused to be named for fear of harassment, said they are shocked by the incident. He cited that the saddest part is that the incident occurred on Women’s Month.

He urged law enforcement agencies to work hard to bring the perpetrators to book.

The leader believes the incident was well orchestrated.

“According to the information that we received from the community, the perpetrators got out of a vehicle and shot and killed the girl. It was reported that the woman was coming from the nearby shop,” he stated.

He said it was not the first time such an incident had occurred in the neighbourhood.

“Last year, there were two similar incidents where people came out of vehicles and shot others. The first incident occurred at Memani Street, where two people were shot while they were sitting in a car by people who were driving a car. In that incident, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the crossfire and died later in hospital. And in another incident, two people were gunned down at the corner of Zolile Geld and Makateng streets by people who came out of the car,” he explained.

He said all they need is police visibility to monitor the area. He said they were traumatised by the incident. “We are scared. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow,” he stated.
