Gugulethu police are on the hunt for a group of gunmen who ambushed four security guards at NY 5 Gugulethu Cemetery on Thursday 9 October, killing one and injuring three others in the brutal attack.

A KTC community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment, said one security guard was sitting in a vehicle while the other three were standing when they were attacked.

“The assailants were driving two cars. One parked in front of the security guards’ vehicle and one behind it. Several men carrying guns exited the vehicles and instructed the three security officers who were standing outside the vehicle to lie down. They then shot the guards before they fled from the scene,” he explained, adding that the security officer that was in the vehicle died on the spot and other three were wounded.

“We are not safe. As community leaders we are scared even to go to the scene because we are accused of being spies of the police.”

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident and said that Gugulethu detectives are investigating murder and attempted murder cases.

“Gugulethu officers responded to a complaint of a shooting on Thursday 9 October around 15:00, in NY 5.”

He said they found a security guard inside a GWM light delivery vehicle who sustained gunshot wounds to his body and three others who were wounded.

“The 45-year-old victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment. According to reports the victims were approached by unknown assailants who shot them. The suspects fled the scene with the victim’s service firearms,” said Twigg.
