Police in Gugulethu successfully rescued a hijacked Quantum minibus driver yesterday (7 January) after he was kidnapped in Langa at 10:30.

The driver was found unharmed in the back of his vehicle after police spotted the minibus whilst keeping a close watch on the Europe informal settlement.

When the suspects realised they had been discovered, they jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The rescued driver’s vehicle sustained minor damage to the dashboard, and both the radio and tracking device had been removed by the hijackers.

Arrest in murder case

In a separate incident, four men were arrested later that evening on charges of murder and being in possession of a hijacked vehicle at a filling station in Okavango Road, Brackenfell.

According to a police statement, members of the Flying Squad received a call at around 23:20 from a vehicle tracking company about a hijacked Toyota Corolla driving around the Brackenfell area.

The Flying Squad found four men, aged between 18 and 22, in the car at the filling station. They claimed it belonged to a friend of theirs. All four were arrested, and a murder charge was added when it was discovered that the car’s driver had been murdered.

The suspects are due to appear in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and being in possession of a hijacked vehicle.
