Gugulethu police are investigating two counts of murder following a shooting incident on Friday 10 October at the Lotus informal settlement.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the incident occurred at about 18:00.

“Upon arrival on the scene the officers found two males aged 23 and 29 who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances and the motive for the attack forms part of the officer’s investigation and arrests are yet to be made,” he said.

The president of Gugulethu Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum (SCPF) and a leader of Apostolic Amen Church, Zamuxolo Mfihlo, expressed that within two weeks almost 10 people were killed in separate shooting incidents in the area. He described Gugulethu as becoming a Sodom.

“All these people were killed by a gun. We need to reclaim our streets from the hooligans. We can’t allow ourselves to be dictated by a few groups of people in our society. The community needs to stand-up and say enough is enough,” said Mfihlo.

Sources have hinted that the shootings may have been the result of extortion-related crimes.

Mfihlo stated that they feel sorry for the families of the deceased men, because some of them didn’t think that their children would be involved in criminal activities.

He urged all the community stakeholders to work together to save the area.
