Motorists using Japtha K Masemola, Baden Powell Drive, Mew Way, Ntlazane and Fukutha roads are urged to be vigilant to prevent hijackings.

The five roads have been identified as hotspots by the Harare police. They are now urging drivers to be on the look out throughout the day while using any of these roads.

Capt Siyabulela Vukubi, Harare police spokesperson, said while police cannot anticipate hijackings, awareness among motorists can go a long way in averting certain incidents.

Among others, Vukubi urged motorists to avoid the following and exercise caution.

“Do not stop around the hijacking spot or at any secluded area where there are no proper lights. Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night. Always be alert when driving, if one suspects that he/she is being followed by a suspicious vehicle, drive to the nearest police station or call Saps emergency number 10111,” he said.

Some warnings include:

  • Do not pick up hitchhikers, particularly when driving alone.
  • Increase caution at intersections and be on the lookout for people loitering around.
  • Refrain from using cell phone while driving as it is a distraction to proper observation and concentration.
  • Avoid drinking and driving as most of the vehicles are taken when people are intoxicated.
  • Always keep the doors locked at all times when travelling.

Vukubi said another crime that was on the rise was house robberies and urged residents to be extra careful.

“On the same breath police are also baffled by the rise in the house robberies that are taking place.

“Residents are urged to exercise precautionary measures in order to ensure their safety at homes,” he said.

“Do not open for strangers. First ask who is at the door before opening. Always keep the doors and burglar gates locked at all times. If possible install an alarm system and always have emergency numbers to report any suspicious activity around the house,” he warned.
