A 38-year-old man from Gugulethu is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court today on suspicion of killing his ex-girlfriend.
The Western Cape police issued a strong warning against gender-based violence (GBV) following the arrest of the suspect for the murder of a woman in Gugulethu Tuesday 20 January.
Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said the arrest was made after Gugulethu officers attended a crime scene at NY1 in Gugulethu where they found the body of a woman at the back of an abandoned building.
“The 40-year-old victim sustained multiple injuries to her body and was declared deceased on the scene. Gugulethu detectives started with their investigation, followed up information and interviewed several people, while crime scene experts combed the scene for clues,” said Twigg.
He said the investigation led detectives to the deceased’s ex-partner. He said the ex-partner was arrested on a charge of murder. A leader of the Gugulethu Community Policinging Forum (CPF) who refused to be named for fear of harassment, described the incident as horrible.
He urged the law to take its course against the perpetrator.
“The incident shocked us. We are appealing to our justice system to do the right thing. As the CPF, we stand by the deceased’s family during this difficult time. We are saying no bail. We want the suspect to rot in jail,” he said.
