Children from educare centres at Site C in Khayelitsha celebrated the World Play Day in style on Friday 7 June as they were having fun in Mandela Park Stadium in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.
The event was organised by Sikhula Sonke Early Childhood Development organisation which is based in Harare and its aim is to support and empower all the educare centres in Khayelitsha as a whole.
Child Protection Ambassador from Sikhula Sonke Winkie Cebisa-Maseti said the event followed the World Protection Week which started on Friday 30 May until Thursday 6 June.She described the occasion as an annual event.
She said their organisation is working close with the educare centers particularly in the disadvantaged communities to empower them.
“We hold this event annually in different areas.
in Khayelitsha. Last year we held it with the educare centers from Mandela Park and this is year is Site C. Then next year we will move to other area within Khayelitsha,” she explained. Cebisa- Maseti said this week is dedicate for children to allow them to play freely in a safe space under the supwrvision of their teachers or parents. She said there are 35 educare centers with 823 children attended the event.
Principal of Nokwanda Community Educare Nomthandazo Mvana described the event as perfect for children. “The event gives the children time to socialise each other. It is also educational because it teaches them alot of things including hygiene,” she said. She urged parents to send their children to educare centers instead of keeping them at home.
