In an effort to bring services closer to the community the Philippi East Library, together with various government departments, hosted a Career Jamboree programme to assist learners in choosing the right subjects for their future careers.

The event was held at Vuyiseka High School in Philippi East on Thursday 9 April.

Guiding learners at the careers jamboree in Philippi East

The event organiser, Philippi East librarian Ayanda Qagana, said this was the third annual initiative aimed at guiding learners in making informed choices about their future.

“We are focusing on Grade 9, 10 and 12 learners only. Only two high schools were represented, Vuyiseka and Lower Crossroads high schools. We noticed many learners visiting our library struggled with applications. Many had no idea of what they could study after their schooling,” she said, adding that some learners do not even meet the requirements for the courses they wish to pursue.

Qaqana said the timing of the event could not be better, for this was the time learners were beginning to apply to tertiary institutions. “Applications are open from March to the end of April. When they start applying, we want them to be fully informed.”

Career opportunities highlighted

A professional officer at the City’s Department of Solid Waste, Mayedwa Perhe, said it offers a wide range of career opportunities beyond waste collection and drain cleaning. “We have careers such as landscaping, environmental education and logistics and transport management, among others. We advised learners on the right subjects for these fields.”

Positive feedback from schools and learners

Vuyiseka High School teacher Vuyolwethu Lugwali described the initiative as highly beneficial.

“I wish they could come two or three times a year, with different stakeholders. It is rare to have such programmes in townships.”

Olothando Mdunyelwa, a Grade 10 learner at Lower Crossroads High School, described the event as educational and impactful.

“I now have a clear idea of what I want to do. I want to be a nurse because I enjoy caring for people. The programme came at the right time.”
