Nyanga police have registered a murder case following the discovery of the burnt body of an unidentified man on Thursday, 26 February, at the corner of Mbovane and Mnqaba streets in Brown’s Farm, Philippi.

Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said officers responded to a complaint about a body lying at the указан address.

“On arrival, officers found the deceased was totally burnt and naked,” he said. “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The deceased is believed to be a young male, approximately 27 years old, and remains unidentified.”

Van Wyk said police are exploring the possibility that the killing may be linked to mob justice.

Police condemn vigilantism in Brown’s Farm

He strongly condemned vigilantism, stating that acts of mob justice are criminal and pose a direct threat to the safety and stability of communities.

“No individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the circumstances. Such actions undermine the justice system and fuel further violence,” he said.

Van Wyk added that detectives are following up on all available leads to identify the victim and trace those responsible for the killing.

“We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information that could assist the investigation to contact the police immediately,” he said.

Community leader alleges mob justice motive

A community leader, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, alleged mob justice was the motive.

“According to information I received from community members, the deceased was allegedly attempting to burgle a house in the area when residents caught and assaulted him. However, they did not say they set him alight,” the leader claimed.

The leader expressed concern over the high levels of crime in Brown’s Farm and appealed to residents to stop taking the law into their own hands.
