Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said Gugulethu officers registered a concealment of birth following the discovery of newborn baby inside a plastic bag found in a dust bin by a member of the public at about 09:55 at NY 64 Khikhi Hostel.
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” he said.
Law
The find raised concerns in the community.
A concerned resident urged the law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in bringing the culprit to book.
The resident, who calls herself Nosi for fear of harassment, said the incident occurred at Etshatshalazeni.
“We suspect that the newborn was dumped in the wheelie bin. But, I don’t know how it fell outside because the baby was in a plastic bag on the street. It looked like a full-fledged baby,” said Nosi.

She urged the law enforcement agencies to properly investigate it and arrest the culprit.
“It doesn’t sit well with me. This is wrong. Imagine killing a small baby. Why didn’t she go for abortion if she doesn’t like her or take the baby to an orphanage home?” asked Nosi adding that the culprit tarnished their image as women.
She stated that there is a possibility the culprit is not from the vicinity, but was dumped there because it is a busy area.
