At least 15 senior citizens from Makhaza received new blankets donated by the Amadoda Aqotho organisation on Sunday, 15 March. The event was held in the garage of a member’s home in Makhaza.

The men’s movement works primarily with young men and campaigns against gender-based violence.

Amadoda Aqotho shows ubuntu through community giving

The organisation’s founder and coordinator, Lumkile Sizila, described the initiative as a way of showing ubuntu and giving back to the community.

“On Wednesday 7 March, we assisted a local church that had an activity at Yomelela Primary School in Site B. The church leaders later offered us blankets as a token of appreciation. Instead of keeping them for ourselves as leaders, we decided to donate them to elders in our area. We wanted to thank them for the role they played in Makhaza during difficult times,” he said.

He added that the organisation does not only focus on campaigns but also addresses various social issues affecting the community.

Support extends to shack-fire victims in Khayelitsha

Sizila said the organisation also recently donated clothes to shack-fire victims in Khayelitsha.

“Earlier this year, we donated clothes to shack-fire victims at the Tsepetsepe informal settlement in Khayelitsha. We have also been supporting victims’ families when they go to court and participating in awareness campaigns taking place in Khayelitsha and neighbouring areas,” he said.

Community expresses gratitude for donation

One of the beneficiaries, Sipho Zondani (61) from Makhaza, expressed gratitude to the organisation, saying that the donation came at the right time.

“The blankets came at the right time because we are approaching the winter rains. We appreciate that they remembered us when they had something to donate. We are happy and did not expect it,” said Zondani.
