Scores of homeless people from Khayelitsha were over the moon on Saturday 24 February when they received special treatment from the Mbonombini Health and Wellness Community Organisation. The event was held at an open space near Khayelitsha Mall in the area.

Mbonombini is a local non-profit organisation specialises in promoting wellness in the area.

Its founder, Belinda Mentile, described the event as showing love. “As we are still celebrating the love month, and we thought of homeless people in Khayelitsha,” she said. “We thought of dedicating this day to them. We are here to wash their feet, face, hands and hair, and then we give them haircuts – just to make them feel good.”

Mentile added that lack of space often meant showering the whole body wasn’t an option for homeless people, and now they had a chance. She said Mbonombini also tried to educate them about the importance of hygiene. Some of them were so relieved after they had washed their hair, Mentile added.

“Afterwards we prepared meals for them after they’d done all these things. And give them clothes for winter.”

One of the homeless people, Sipho, said he felt better after washing his hair. “I’m staying near the Caltex garage in Spine Road,” he said. “But originally I’m from Makhaza. It had been months without bathing. Today I feel fresh. My hands and feet are clean.”

Sipho cited family problems when asked why he had left home.
