Nyanga police are investigating the murder of a woman who was shot in an Avanza in Zwelitsha Drive, Nyanga on Tuesday 2 July.

She succumbed to her wounds in the vehicle in front of the Nyanga Police Station.

Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swaartbooi said the circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.

“Reports suggested that the complainant, a 50-year-old woman, was a passenger in a Toyota Avanza on Tuesday 2 July around 07:06. Unknown armed men fired gunshots at the vehicle fatally wounding the victim.”

When the incident occurred, the vehicle was stationed in Zwelitsha Drive. The driver of the vehicle, desperate for help, then drove to the police station with the injured victim in the passenger seat.

“She was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” said Swartbooi.

He said the unknown armed men fled the scene and the investigation officers will pursue all the relevant information in a bid to ensure a breakthrough.

Nyanga Community Policing Forum secretary Dumisani Qwebe said the group was shocked by the incident. He said the incident forced the station to be closed temporarily.

“We suspect the shooting occurred near Zolani Centre and the driver drove to the police station for help. He parked the vehicle before the entrance to the police station. Immediately the driver stopped the vehicle and the passenger was taking her last breath.”

Qwebe believes criminals are declaring war on the community and Nyanga was becoming a crime zone.
