AKTC councillor is appealing to law enforcement officials to do everything possible to ensure the arrest and prosecution of a woman who dumped her newborn in a drain.

The fully developed foetus was discovered by local workers on Thursday 25 July in a drain in Moonlight Village at Nondzila Street.

Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana said the community is still perplexed by how the body ended up in the drain.

She described the incident as gruesome and urged the community to assist the officers in tracking the culprit.

“This is not the first time such an incident occurred in this ward.

“Two similar incidents occurred last year at NY5 in Gugulethu and Memani Street in KTC.

“It has become a norm for females to give birth to their children and dump them,” she said, adding that she does not recall the exact months for the previous incidents.

Describing how the body looked like, Zumana said it was fully developed. “It looked as if the mother had given birth and after that dumped the child because the baby had hair,” said Zumana, adding she did not know the gender because the baby was facing down.

She said the body looked in perfect condition.

Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident. He said an inquest docket was opened. He said Gugulethu police attended a complaint in Moonlight Village at Nondzila Street, KTC on Thursday 25 July.

He said upon arrival at around 15:30, they found the body of a baby. “Reports suggested that local workers discovered the body when they were cleaning drains in the area. The victim was declared deceased by the medical personnel,” said Swartbooi.
