Browns Farm Satellite Police Station, in Philippi, is expected to be open soon in a quest to fight crime in the area.

The station is housed at Browns Farm Library and is one of many changes to the facility since it was broken into in August last year.

According to police figures, the neighbourhood is one of the crime hotspots in the Nyanga policing precinct.

The new Browns Farm Satellite Police Station is in the process of completion.

Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) secretary Dumisani Qwebe said the opening of a satellite police station is a breath of fresh air.

He said the opening is part of the government’s goal to bring services closer to the people.

“The police converted some of the City’s offices into a station. It is a strategic plan to alleviate crime in the area. We believe its operation will have a positive impact on our community,” said Qwebe.

He stated that the station would serve the entire Philippi.

He said according to senior police officials, the station is supposed to be officially open today (1 August).

“Definitely, it is going to be open this month. Even if not on Thursday 1 August, it will open this month.

“People won’t have to go to Nyanga Police Station for certifying their Identity Documents or opening cases. They will go to the new police station,” he said.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa could not confirm the exact opening date for the station but stated that it would open soon.

She emphasised that it was a satellite police station. “It is not a fully-fledged police station. It is a satellite police station.

“Residents can lodge a complaint and do other small things in Browns Farm but the system is still in Nyanga. All the cases are going to be transferred to Nyanga,” said Potelwa.
