- Residents of the Bosasa TRA in Mfuleni have taken a stand against rising crime by barricading two main routes, controlling and monitoring motorists entering the area, and creating a single entrance.
- The community, frustrated with the lack of police visibility and ineffective crime prevention, has been experiencing high levels of daytime robberies, with thieves targeting televisions and other valuables.
- Ward 141 councillor Enerst Madikane supports the community’s demands for a fully-fledged police station in Mfuleni, citing the inadequacy of the nearby Blue Downs Police Station and the need for increased police presence to curb crime.
Residents from the Bosasa TRA in Mfuleni joined hands to fight crime in the area by barricading two main routes in the neighobourhood.
They aim to control and monitor motorists that come into the area.
Resident Lundi Magqaza said a single entrance has been opened to control the movement of the vehicles into the area.
He said crime is on the rise and people are being robbed during the day.
“It’s been more than a year since we closed these roads,” said Magqaza.
According to him, there are unknown people who drive around the area robbing people of their belongings. “Sometimes they steal televisions and other things,” he said.
He said the community is tired of crime and there is little that the officers are doing to curb it.
“Crime rate is high here. There’s no police visibility. The officers only come when something is happening. It is rare to see a police van going around here,” explained Magqaza.
Ward 141 councillor Enerst Madikane agrees that crime at Bosasa TRAs is out of control.
Madikane says the community is tired of crime, adding that the Mfuleni satellite police station has done little to curb crime.
“We’ve been making an outcry demanding the construction of a fully-fledged police station in Mfuleni. The Blue Downs Police Station doesn’t belong to us. We want our own police station,” he said.
