Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) has applauded the Nyanga Police Station officers who were honoured by the Western Cape Provincial Community Police Board (WCPCPB) for their job in Nyanga.

At least 25 officers in various positions were awarded at a special event held at provincial offices on Friday 13 September.

In a statement released on Saturday 14 September, the WCPCPB stated it was proud to congratulate the stations, officers, and teams within the City of Cape Town District who were recognised for their exceptional service at the Police City of Cape Town District Awards.

The statement said the awards highlighted the tireless effort of the men and women in the police and CPF, showcasing that excellence does exist even under the most challenging conditions.

Nyanga CPF secretary Dumisani Qwebe praised the officers for dedicating their lives to protect the Nyanga community, citing that their recognition is the beginning of good things to come. He said it has been long overdue for Nyanga officers to be recognised because they’ve been working their socks off. “We are not surprised to see them winning the awards. We know that they are working, but sometimes things do not turn out the way they want. They put the Nyanga police station on the map for good reason. This is the beginning of many good things to come,” said Qwebe. He said their primary goal is to take Nyanga station out of the top 10 national stations in the murder category.

Qwebe stated that all they need to do is to go back to basics where they work together with all the community stakeholders to be able to fight crime. “We need to work with all the stakeholders, including the non-governmental organisations in the Nyanga precinct. We want everyone to be the ears and eyes of the officers in the areas,” he stated.

Qwebe said they are working on removing the stigma that the area is known as a murder capital. He stated that the extortion and taxi-related shootings have an impact on escalating murder cases in the precinct.

“We are on the right track. The Nyanga police station has 25 officers awarded by the WCPCPB. It demonstrates that there are some changes and as CPF, we support them,” he stated.
