A devastated Pelu family from Zwelitsha, Khayelitsha is appealing for assistance in burying their child. Hlaluminathi Daki (3), who lived with his family at BS section, went missing on Tuesday 24 September, and his half-naked body was discovered in a nearby pond on Wednesday 2 October.

His father, Lizo Pelu, on Tuesday 8 October, described how hard he was taking his little boy’s tragic end. Moreover, he faced the mammoth burden of burying him.

“I don’t know where to start. We have nothing. Tygerberg Hospital is charging us R1 800 for conducting a DNA test on my son. We don’t have it and don’t know where we’re going to get it. And we have to plan the funeral.” What’s more, Pelu said, the mortuary refused to let them view their son’s body because of the state it was in.

He said he and his partner were both unemployed, surviving on odd jobs and child-support grants.

“Our plan is to bury my son here in Cape Town. All I wish for is to see my son have a decent burial like everybody else. I’m so heartbroken. Hlaluminathi was the only child I had with my girlfriend. I’m shattered.” Pelu added that people could assist with whatever they had, and it didn’t have to be cash.
