The residents of Gugulethu and surrounding communities have woken up to sad news of passing Mandisa Monakali(64) on Sunday 3 November.
Monakali, who was an activist and community builder, was the founder of the well-known Ilitha Labantu organisation.
Ilitha Labantu is a non-profit organisation which focuses on addressing violence against women and children.
The organisation’s spokesperson and son of the deceased, Siyabulela Monakali, confirmed his mother’s death but refused to comment further.
“Yes, it’s true my mom is no more. Please don’t write an article about it,” he said in a WhatsApp message.
The deceased family had posted the message on the organisation’s Facebook page this morning to inform the public.
The message reads.
“Mandisa’s legacy as the founder of Ilitha Labantu and her tireless efforts for the empowerment and safety of women and children will continue to inspire generations to come. Her compassion, resilience, and determination remain etched in the lives of everyone she touches,” it says.
“As we come to terms with this great loss, we kindly ask for your prayers and support during this time of mourning.
