Asanda Village residents in Lwandle are traumatised after three people were gunned down on Friday 13 December.

The victims were sitting in a car in Shumani Street when they were killed.

Following the shooting, residents were appealing to the government to deploy more officers on the ground in the ongoing fight against crime.

One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said lives are in danger in the area, and that the incident occurred close to midnight.

“The incident occurred in front of the tavern in Shumani Street. The deceased were sitting inside the car when they were attacked. We suspect they were among the patrons who had been drinking in the tavern. We don’t know what prompted the shooting because it seems nothing was taken from them.”

Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Malcolm Pojie confirmed the incident, and said a triple murder docket was registered for investigation. He said the Provincial Detectives’ Serious and Violent Crime Investigating Unit was probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred around 23:20. The three men were aged 25 to 32.

“Preliminary information suggests one of the victims had come from the tavern and joined the other two seated in a silver-grey vehicle when an unknown vehicle approached them.

“The unknown occupants then opened fire on the three victims, one of whom succumbed on the scene to gunshot wounds while the other two were declared dead on arrival at a medical facility.

“The motive for these killings forms part of ongoing investigation, and the suspects have yet to be arrested.”
