A sense of hope filled four primary schools in Ward 18, in Site C, Khayelitsha, when ward 18 councillor, Ntomboxolo Kopman, donated school bags to 40 of their neediest learners, 10 at each school, on Thursday, 21 May.

Four primary schools benefit from Ward 18 initiative

The schools that benefited from the donation were Vuselela, Encotsheni, Sivile and Nolungile.

Kopman said each school bag contained five bars of soap, toothpaste and a toothbrush. She said the items were purchased using the ward allocation, and the aim of the initiative was to encourage and motivate learners.

“We wish we could have given bags to all the learners, but we were unable to do so because of limited funds. We asked teachers to identify learners who were most in need. We encouraged them to focus on their studies.”

School bags include essential hygiene items for learners

She added the toiletries were included to help promote good hygiene among learners.

Sivile Primary School principal Pumla Sibene praised the councillor for the initiative. She expressed gratitude to the ward councillor and her team for supporting the learners.

“The initiative was helpful because some learners did not have school bags. We believe that receiving new school bags will motivate them and boost their self-esteem.”
