Shack fire victims at Thabo Mbeki informal settlement in Crossroads have been left devastated after their homes were ravaged by a blaze on Saturday, 9 May. At least eight shacks were destroyed, leaving more than 25 people homeless. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

According to community leader, Buzwe Kali, the incident occurred at about 04:00. He describes conditions in the area as terrible as many victims lost almost everything they owned.

Appeals for urgent assistance

“The situation is tough. People are struggling to rebuild their shacks because of the weather. Some are staying with relatives, while others are staying with friends. We don’t know what to do, but we are appealing to local businesses and humanitarian organisations to come on board and assist,” he said.

Kali added that he had informed City officials about the incident.

One of the fire victims, Lindiwe Tyhulu, said she did not know what to do as she is unemployed.

“I am staying at my friend’s place with my child. I don’t know how I am going to rebuild my shack. I don’t have food. We are depending on my friend,” she said, adding that she would appreciate any assistance with clothes and food.
