Two killed, three hurt in Browns Farm shebeen shooting


Nyanga police have registered two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident on Tuesday, 21 April, at Eyadini informal settlement in Browns Farm, Philippi. The incident occurred at approximately 16:00.

Provincial police spokesperson, Captain F.C. van Wyk, confirmed that two men, aged 30 and 40, were shot and fatally wounded, while three others were injured. The injured victims were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

“Nyanga police responded to a shooting incident at the mentioned address. Upon arrival, officers found one deceased person inside a shack with a gunshot wound to the head. The second victim was found a few metres away, also with gunshot wounds to the head. The three injured victims were taken to hospital,” said Van Wyk.

He added that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation, and the motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage. “The suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested,” he said.

Community in shock after Browns Farm attack

A community leader, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of harassment, described the incident as horrific. He said the victims were at a shebeen when the shooting occurred. However, he added that one of the deceased was a woman.

“Unknown men entered and randomly opened fire on patrons. A woman was shot multiple times and died inside the shebeen. Another victim was also shot several times. He tried to escape but collapsed a few metres away and died. Three others were seriously injured. We will not speculate and will leave the matter to the authorities,” he said.

Residents call for increased security and patrols

He added that crime remains a serious concern in the area and appealed for soldiers to be deployed to patrol the community.
