Gugulethu’s Sport Council leader is thrilled after receiving gym equipment donated by Virgin Active Parow on Wednesday, 8 April.

Nceba Sandlana, the chair of the Gugulethu Sport Council, said the equipment means a lot to them as it will assist the community.

How the Gugulethu gym equipment donation came about

Explaining how they acquired the equipment, Sandlana said they met with Virgin Active officials in Gugulethu while celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Gugulethu Sport Complex three years ago.

“We asked them to donate any kind of training equipment for the Gugulethu Sport Complex. Earlier this year, they contacted us and informed us that they would be closing the Virgin Active in Parow at the end of this month. On Wednesday, 8 April, we went to collect it. We were surprised when we saw the equipment—the truck was full of it,” said Sandlana, adding that they will share the equipment with other sports facilities in the area.

He said their objective is to revive community fitness facilities and promote a healthier lifestyle in Gugulethu.

Community facilities to benefit from the donation

“We will distribute the equipment to three facilities, including the Gugulethu Sports Complex, Ikhwezi, and Lukhanyisweni community halls. We believe this will help keep children off the streets,” said Sandlana.

He expressed his gratitude to Virgin Active and vowed that they will keep the equipment safe.
