Khayelitsha jazz singer Babalwa Mentjies (45) expressed sheer excitement at being included in the line-up for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Saturday 28 March.

Sharing the Moses Molelekwa Stage with jazz legends

She will perform on the festival’s prestigious Moses Molelekwa Stage, alongside such industry legends as Abdullah Ibrahim, Nduduzo Mkhathini, George Werner and Muneeb Hermanus.

Mentjies reflected on this milestone: “I am over the moon! My dream has come true! It’s my first time performing on such a big stage. Not just any jazz artist performs on the Moses Molelekwa Stage. Artists who performed there include Sibongile Khumalo, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, George Benson, all big guns.”

From local gigs to international tours

She said her invitation came after a recommendation from members of the Camissa Knights Band, with whom she frequently collaborates.

Mentjies encouraged jazz lovers to attend and promised a performance reminiscent of icons Gloria Bosman, Winston Mankunku Ngozi and Bobby Jensen.

Having toured internationally in countries such as Germany, Greece and the UK, she is passionate about mentoring young talent to become well-known artists. She also emphasised one’s background should never limit one’s ambitions:

Mentoring the next generation and carrying Khayelitsha’s flag

“On Saturday I’m going to the festival carrying the Khayelitsha flag high. So, people mustn’t give up on their dreams.”

Mentjies’ participation marks a significant milestone in her career and is a proud moment for both her and her community.
