The Khayelitsha Taxi Association has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the Vuyani Public Transport Interchange (PTI) near Embengweni (Shisanyama) in Town Two, Khayelitsha. Construction, which began in May last year, is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
Codeta praises Vuyani Public Transport Interchange construction
Spokesperson for the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta), Makhosandile Tumana, said they are pleased with the progress at the site, noting that everything is proceeding according to plan. He described the construction of the taxi rank as long overdue.
“We are happy with the progress. We haven’t heard any complaints from our members working there, which shows they don’t have any problems. We can’t wait to see it operating,” Tumana said.
However, Tumana expressed concern about traffic congestion on Spine Road, which has become busier due to the City’s ongoing MyCiTi road construction. “This is not affecting only us but all motorists using Spine Road. It becomes chaotic, especially during peak hours,” he explained.

City Mayco member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, emphasized that the completed facility will provide dedicated spaces for minibus-taxi operators and serve commuters traveling to Mfuleni, Eerste River, Blackheath, Kuils River, and Lwandle, enhancing connectivity and convenience for the community.
“The construction of the Vuyani PTI is an important investment in improved infrastructure and safer, more accessible public transport for our community. I am very pleased with the progress and quality of work to date. Once complete, the facility will include covered waiting areas, safe loading lanes, improved lighting, ablution facilities, and an administration building,” Quintas said.
He added that commuters will soon be able to access minibus taxis, the MyCiTi Bus Service, and Golden Arrow buses from one convenient location, marking another step toward keeping Cape Town moving safely and efficiently.
