Nyanga police have registered murder and attempted murder cases for investigation following a shooting incident in Sheffield Road, Brown’s Farm, on Wednesday, 11 February. The incident occurred at about 10:30.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said a 25-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded, while a 17-year-old boy was injured.

“Officers responded to a complaint of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, the victims had already been transported to a medical facility for treatment. The 25-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The other victim was struck by a stray bullet and is in a stable condition,” he said.

Twigg added that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Community calls for vigilance amid rising crime

A South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) member in Brown’s Farm, who declined to be named for fear of reprisals, alleged that the deceased had been attempting to rob a local taxi driver.

“He was allegedly trying to carry out a smash-and-grab on an Avanza driver. It is alleged that the driver drew a firearm and shot him. The other victim was hit by a stray bullet,” the Sanco member said.

The Sanco representative urged motorists in Philippi to remain vigilant, as crime remains rife in the area.
