Residents of Samora Machel are pleased with the progress on the construction of the new Weltevreden Community Day Centre (CDC), with many believing the contractor may complete the project ahead of its scheduled September 2026 deadline.

The construction project, which began in mid-2024, represents a significant development for the community and surrounding areas.

Ward 33 councillor Lungisa Somdaka confirmed that the project remains on track without any major disruptions.

“We are happy with the progress for now. Everything is going smoothly. Our community is patiently waiting for the clinic to be completed,” said Somdaka.

The councillor described the clinic construction as “a breath of fresh air” for residents, who currently must travel to neighboring areas for medical care.

The new facility will serve not only Samora Machel but also surrounding communities. Currently, residents must travel to Hanover Park and Philippi for medical treatment.

“The clinic is huge. It is a double story building that will accommodate not just Samora Machel, but neighboring areas as well,” Somdaka explained. “Sometimes residents default on their treatment because they don’t have money for public transport to access healthcare.”

Local resident Lwazi Maki highlighted the urgent need for nearby medical facilities, sharing a recent incident where his friend was stabbed during a robbery.

“A friend of mine was robbed and stabbed in the stomach while coming home from work in the evening,” Maki recounted. “Fortunately, a neighbour saw him and alerted us. We had to hire private transport to take him to Mitchells Plain hospital.”

Maki believes the new clinic will significantly improve the area’s prospects and emergency response capabilities.

According to Western Cape Department of Infrastructure spokesperson Melt Botes, the project has reached 60% completion, with a contractual completion date of 8 September 2026.

The R180.3 million project includes the design and construction of a comprehensive two-story CDC with all necessary site improvements and utility services.

Comprehensive medical services

The new facility will offer clinical services on both levels, featuring:

  • Rapid assessment and support care unit
  • Acute care
  • Radiography
  • Pharmacy
  • Family care
  • Rehabilitation
  • Dental care
  • Chronic care

The department is currently working with the City of Cape Town and the ward councillor to resolve sewer reticulation challenges that could impact the CDC’s operations and underground services.
