Police in the Western Cape have launched a large-scale manhunt after seven men aged between 20 and 30 were shot dead and their bodies set alight in Philippi East on Friday evening.
The brutal attack occurred at approximately 20:00 last night at Better Life, Philippi East, prompting authorities to assign detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit to lead the investigation.
Provincial police spokesperson Col André Traut confirmed that investigators are pursuing every available lead to identify and apprehend those responsible for the mass killing.
“Western Cape police management has strongly condemned the senseless act of violence and confirmed that the investigation has been prioritised to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice,” Traut said.
Community fears extortion links
A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, revealed disturbing details about the incident and suggested it may be linked to extortion activities plaguing the area.
“The deceased were shot and killed and after that they were set alight,” the community leader said. “According to community members who reside closer to where the incident occurred, they don’t know the deceased. They said the deceased had just arrived in the house and they had a tendency of always arriving at night. No one knows them.”
The leader explained that the house where the killings took place had been empty for some time, leading to suspicions that the victims were using it as a hideout.
“Now that there is this incident, we suspect that they were running from somewhere. They used the house as a place to hide,” he said.
The community leader expressed fears that the killings were extortion-related, highlighting the climate of fear gripping local residents.
“We are also scared to speak out because we don’t know who to trust now. This thing [extortion] is serious and most of the people who are involved are young people,” he explained.
Police appeal for community assistance
Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile has expressed serious concern about the escalating violence and appealed directly to community members for assistance.
“Community cooperation is crucial in bringing those responsible to book and restoring safety to our neighbourhoods,” Patekile said.
The police have urged anyone with information about the killings to come forward as investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the brutal attack.
The mass shooting represents the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued communities across the Western Cape, with authorities increasingly concerned about the impact of extortion and gang-related violence on local residents.
