A leader of Gugulethu Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum (SCPF) urged the community to “unite against crime”.

The president of Gugulethu SCPF, Rev Zamuxolo Mfihlo said this during an anti- crime prayer service which was held at the United Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa on Saturday 11 October.

This comes after two people were gunned down at Lotus informal settlement in

Gugulethu on Friday 10 October in what was suspected an extortion related incident.

Mfihlo said within two weeks almost 10 people were killed in the area.

“All these people were killed by a gun. We need to reclaim our streets from the hooligans. We can’t be dictated to by a few groups of people in our society. The community needs to stand-up and say enough is enough,” said Mfihlo.

He said they feel deep sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives and urged all community stakeholders to work together to fight crime.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said Gugulethu police registered two counts of murder for investigation following a shooting incident on Friday 10 October at Lotus informal settlement. He said the incident occurred at about 18:00.

“The officers found two males aged 23 and 29 who sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances and the motive for the attack forms part of the investigation and arrests are yet to be made,” he said.
