Nyanga police are investigating a murder case following the killing of a 61-year-old man at Dlephu Street in Browns Farm, Philippi this morning.
Provincial police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi said the detectives are hard at work gathering information at the crime scene in Dlephu Street, Browns Farm for clues where a 61-year-old man was shot and killed earlier today (Tuesday 16 September).
“Information at our disposal suggests that unknown gunmen opened fire at the deceased and fled the scene. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The motive for this attack is believed to be taxi related,” said Swartbooi.
A Nyanga community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal described the incident as shocking. He said he knows the deceased, and he had worked with him before. “The deceased was a member of CATA and was once its spokesperson. He was a good person. The taxi related war is getting out of hand now. They need to stop it. Enough is enough. Whatever they are fighting about, but killing each other won’t resolve the problem. They need to sit down and talk,” he said.
He urged the Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia to intervene and deploy more boots on the ground to monitor the situation. “We are living by God’s grace. Our lives are in danger. We are scared even to talk with the media,” he said.
