A leader of Gugulethu Development Forum (GDF) has slammed an attack on a Golden Arrow bus that occurred in Govan Mbeki Road near Gugulethu on Monday 21 July, which saw it being set alight.

Its secretary, Vincent Domingo, said attacks on public transport do not bring any solution to transport and other challenges. If anything, they make things worse.

He urged the government to dispatch more law enforcement to play a more preventative role in such attacks.

“It is unfortunate that a Golden Arrow bus was targeted… The worst part is that it is our people who are the victims. If Golden Arrow suspends its service on that route as a result it won’t help our people at all, as most people using public transport are working-class.”

Domingo urged the perpetrators to find a less-destructive way to resolve their problems.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Wesley Twigg said his office could confirm a malicious-damage-to-property case was registered on Monday 21 July following an incident in Govan Mbeki Road, Brown’s Farm, Philippi, in which a bus was set alight. He said the circumstances surrounding the incident were under investigation and no arrests had yet been made.
