A total of 94 people KTC residents are without shelter after 36 shacks caught fire on Monday evening 26 May. The blaze broke out around 10:00 and the cause is unknown.
Bulelwa Tolofiya, one of the victims, said she heard people screaming and when she went outside to investigate she saw a huge flame.
“I was already asleep when the fire started. I heard people shouting ‘fire, fire’. Immediately, I jumped out of bed and wore my gown. I then woke up my children who were sleeping on the floor before I went outside to assess the situation,” said Tolofiya.
She said the blaze started closer to her shack and she lost everything.
Ward 38 councillor Suzanne Zumana said she informed the City of Cape Town and Gift of the Givers about the incident.

“According to the information we currently have, only 36 shacks have been affected and 94 left destitute. We are still going to verify it, maybe the number will increase we don’t know. We are appealing to the community to contribute with whatever they have to assist the victims,” said Zumana.
When the City Vision visited the area on Tuesday 27 May the City officials and Eskom employees were on site assessing the damage. The victims were clearing rubble from the site.
