A Cape Town traffic arrest in the suburb of Tokai has resulted in four suspects being taken into custody. This followed a routine patrol that uncovered false number plates and a haul of suspected stolen property, Cape Town Traffic spokesperson Kevin Jacobs has confirmed.
Jacobs said officers were conducting a routine patrol along Main Road in Tokai on Wednesday 14 May. They pulled over a white Kia Sonet at approximately 15:15 after noticing irregularities with the vehicle’s registration plates. A closer inspection confirmed the plates were false.
Routine stop uncovers major find
According to Jacobs, officers searched the vehicle and found a significant collection of items, including:
- Eight bank cards
- Four cellphones
- A false identity document
- Four additional sets of false number plates
- Two two-way radios
“Officers spotted the suspicious plates during a routine patrol and acted immediately,” Jacobs said.
Four suspects arrested and charged
Jacobs confirmed that the four occupants of the vehicle, aged 51, 38, 37 and 26, were arrested on the scene. The charges include possession of stolen property, fraud and ATM scamming.
He added that investigators had linked the four suspects to a series of incidents in Table View on Tuesday 13 May involving scams, fraud and theft targeting members of the public. The four are currently being held at Kirstenhof Police Station pending further investigation, Jacobs said.
Officers praised for quick thinking
Jacobs praised his officers for their alertness, saying the arrest was a direct result of vigilant routine patrolling. He urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly at ATMs, and to report suspicious activity to the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 10111 or via the MySAPS app.
