Quinton de Kock had a big hand in his side’s dismantlement of the Capitals

It was the De Kock and Bairstow show as Sunrisers Eastern Cape delivered a spectacular batting masterclass to demolish Pretoria Capitals by 10 wickets at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday, chasing down 177 runs with nearly five overs to spare.

The Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first, but immediately encountered difficulties. Openers Esterhuizen and Parsons began cautiously before Parsons found his rhythm in the fourth over, striking three boundaries. However, his promising knock of 18 (15) balls ended when Sipamla dismissed him, leaving the Capitals at 30/1.

Shai Hope’s brief stay concluded quickly, caught behind for just 5 runs in the fifth over. A solid partnership between Lubbe and Esterhuizen steadied the innings momentarily, but Gregory broke through in the 11th over, removing Lubbe for 21.

Esterhuizen reached his half-century in the 12th over, displaying excellent timing and placement. Nevertheless, the dreaded Nelson struck in the 14th over when he was caught in deep after a Nortje delivery for 52, leaving the Capitals struggling at 111/4.

The middle order collapsed dramatically as Brevis fell for eight in the 16th over, followed by Russell’s dismissal for four when De Kock produced one of his trademark spectacular diving catches behind the stumps. The Capitals eventually posted 176/6, with Rutherford remaining unbeaten on 47, agonisingly short of his maiden SA20 fifty.

Chasing 177, Sunrisers Eastern Cape began aggressively with openers De Kock and Bairstow. They raced to 29 without loss in the first three overs and reached 66/0 at the powerplay’s conclusion.

The explosive pair reached their century partnership by the tenth over, completely dominating the Capitals’ bowling attack. The eleventh over witnessed cricket history as De Kock and Bairstow smashed five sixes and a four, creating the biggest over in SA20 tournament history.

By the fifteenth over, the Sunrisers had equalised the target with another massive six from De Kock. The next delivery sealed victory as they romped home with 29 balls remaining.

Bairstow finished unbeaten on 85*(45) balls, whilst De Kock contributed a brilliant 79 *(41). Their unbroken 177-run partnership showcased breathtaking strokeplay and clinical execution.
