Freek Bester (physician), along with other staff members in the background .<\/div>\n<div class=\"img_accreditation\"><span class=\"source\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><span class=\"photographer\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"p\">It was no small feat when Covid-19 patient Joseph Mbebe (57) from Langenhovenpark left the Life Rosepark Hospital after 234 days in hospital.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cWe were so glad to have him back home,\u201d his wife, Matshabalala Mbebe, told <em>Bloem News<\/em>. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">He was discharged on Friday, 19 February. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cIt was a very hectic seven months, especially at times when I couldn\u2019t visit him due to Covid restrictions. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cI took time off from work this week to care for him, but he is well on his road to recovery,\u201d she said.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">Joseph, who is self-employed, was admitted to hospital on the evening of 30 June last year. He was extremely ill and diagnosed with Covid-19 pneumonia. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">At first he was admitted to the general Covid-19 ward, but shortly after admission he had complications and multiple organ failure with septicemia. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">He was moved to the hospital\u2019s multiple intensive care unit, where he was put on a ventilator on 3 July.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">Dr Sanelle Bosch, one of his treating physicians, said Joseph was supported with ventilation, dialysis and several other forms of life support. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cHe showed initial improvement with treatment, but fell back several times and developed fulminant septicemia.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cDespite the setbacks sustained, all the physicians involved with his supportive treatment never gave up on him recovering.\u201d<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">Finally, after 221 days of uninterrupted ventilated support, he was able to be discharged from the hospital back to his family.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">Hannika Struwig, marketing and communications manager at Life Rosepark, said while Covid-19 was still looming at the front door, this is an uplifting story.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cThe mortality rate of Covid-19 pneumonia requiring ventilation is above 60%. This means his recovery is remarkable. It is believed that he might be one of the longest surviving ventilated Covid-19 patients in the world.\u201d<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">The whole team responsible for his treatment gathered around and wished him well when he was discharged.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">The hospital handed over a rose bush to Joseph and asked him to plant the bush in his garden in remembrance of the miracle of his recovery and, as it grows, to celebrate his life\u2019s journey ahead.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">He is now recovering at home.<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cHe is becoming stronger every day,\u201d his wife said. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cIt is also really good to have him home and help him along his road to recovery.\u201d<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">Good wishes also poured in from the Free State Department of of Health. Elke de Witt, communications director, said they were proud to have health care partners in the private sector so dedicated to saving the lives of Free State citizens. <p><\/p>\n<div class=\"p\">\u201cThe dedication and care which Mr Mbebe received at Life Rosepark Hospital surely contributed to him being able to return to his loved ones. As the Department of Health we wish to thank all healthcare workers who have spent many hours to care for our patients and who\u2019s commitment in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic is
