Her project to develop a Shipwreck Interpretation Centre at Cape Agulhas to preserve forgotten shipwreck tragedies, has seen L\u00fanell Greyling of the University of the Free State (UFS) declared a regional winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greyling received R10 000 in prize money and the opportunity to compete in the national competition, of which the winners will be announced at a hybrid event held in May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She explained that she had been inspired by the wreck of the Japanese fishing vessel Meisho Maru No. 38, which ran aground off the Cape Agulhas coastline on 16 November 1982. Having visited the area in the first year of her architectural studies, she recalled what had captivated her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe never think twice about the tragedies of those lost at sea. Preserving these memories is therefore important, which inspired me to write about architectural spaces that act as a stage that interprets and retells shipwreck events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another UFS student, Altus le Roux, clinched R6 000 as prize for his use of masonry. The runner-up prize of R8 000 went to Chrizelle Loots and the prize for the second runner-up, which amounts to R6 000, went to Amirah Patel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
