David van Vuuren, DA member of the provincial legislature (MPL) in the Free State, says the DA has raised concerns regarding the expenses of the funeral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn 11 April, we submitted a question to premier Mxolisi Dukwana, seeking answers about the excessive costs that exceeded the limits defined by the state\u2019s funeral policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn his response, it was revealed that an astonishing R3,4 million was spent on Makgoe\u2019s funeral. The DA firmly asserts that such extravagant spending cannot be justified when 62% of Free State residents are living in poverty. The implications for our community are profound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Van Vuuren says it is incomprehensible to explain to struggling residents, unable to provide for their families or afford basic transportation, that R1 288 million was allocated to food and beverages. Equally perplexing is the fact that R12 000 was spent on a red carpet and R9 900 on AstroTurf in a region plagued by a lack of functional roads. Furthermore, R59 000 was squandered on red roses while residents grappled with water scarcity and the inability to cultivate vegetable gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe allocation of R95 000 for a tombstone for an individual could have covered the salaries of 21 minimum-wage workers for an entire month or provided sustenance for a family for two years. This financial irresponsibility is devoid of compassion and reflects a self-centred agenda that primarily benefits a select few within the ANC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Van Vuuren says the DA has reported this matter to the Public Protector for investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
