Lovers of classical music are invited to listen to the Odeion School of Music (OSM) Camerata performing Concerto Grosso No. 4 <\/span>and<\/span><\/span>Stabat Mater<\/span><\/span>Sunday, 21 April, at the Anglican Cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anmari van der West\u00adhuizen is the conductor with soloists Ilze van Staden (soprano) and Teresa de Wit (mezzo-soprano).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main work of the concert is theStabat Mater <\/span><\/span>by Giovanni Pergolesi. This is one of Pergolesi\u2019s most celebrated sacred works, gaining popularity after the composer\u2019s death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean-Jacques Rousseau showed appreciation for the work, praising the opening movement as \u201cthe most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The liturgical use of the 13th-century poem \u201cStabat mater dolorosa\u201d has varied over the centuries, and it has been set in the prevailing styles of every era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pergolesi creates an amazing variety of sounds and moods from this very formal text and his quite restrained forces Z<\/span> two solo voices, strings and, in this edition, an organ continuo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concert will open with the evergreen Concerto Grosso Opus 6 No. 4<\/span><\/span>by Arcangeli Correli. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movements follow the layout of another type of Baroque instrumental music, the four movements of the church sonata: slow-fast-slow-fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
