Thanks to a computer laboratory, the Koot Niemann Primary School in Bloemspruit, Bloemfontein, can now contribute towards creating a technology-savvy generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The information communication technology company Rectron South Africa donated this laboratory as part of its corporate social investment (CSI) programme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new laboratory boasts 20 laptops with programmes that will help learners to master the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Robotics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Spencer Chen, chief executive officer of Rectron, the laboratory is worth R200 000. In addition to the learning devices, a printer, projector and safety equipment were installed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A power trolley is also ready to provide backup in the event of a power outage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe decided to invest in a Free State school because of the province\u2019s ongoing track record of excellent matric results,\u201d said Chen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy helping a primary school, we hope to ensure the sustainability of the province\u2019s good results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Kutlwano Rawana, the company\u2019s CSI programme manager, the school was chosen based on the company\u2019s priority to invest in poverty-stricken communities to bridge the learning gap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe mission to is empower learners from these communities so that they can be on par with their peers from advanced backgrounds,\u201d said Rawana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe identified the Free State as the ideal province to aid in the understanding of Mathematics and Science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Rawana, the laboratory creates a structured learning environment in which learners can prepare for a technology-savvy future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jacques Pelser, responsible for robotics, and Bettie de Lange, in charge of the remedial teaching programme, are dedicated to equipping the school\u2019s learners with the necessary technological skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Theuns Hane\u00adkom, principal of the Koot Niemann Primary School, the laboratory will be far-reaching in terms of shaping and sharpening learners\u2019 ability to learn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is necessary to help the learners gain the skills needed for the modern world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
December Moloi, director of the Department of Education in the Motheo District, described the laboratory as a catalyst for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
