Dedicated teacher Nneheng Thamae from Ficksburg has been shortlisted for the prestigious African Union (AU) Teacher Prize for 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Department of Basic Education nominated her on merit for the coveted competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thamae\u2019s nomination for the continental teachers prize rewards her excellent work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was named as the deserving national winner of Excellence in Gr. R teaching at the National Teachers Awards last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The awards honour teachers for their fortitude and resilience in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She currently works at the Meqheleng Primary School as a Gr. R teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is a first for her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI could not believe it when the department\u2019s national office notified me of my nomination. I either had to accept or decline, but I accepted the nomination, because I felt honoured being nominated,\u201d said Thamae. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has a National Diploma in Educare and teaches Mathematic, Life skills and Sotho language. Her class has 34 learners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI love working with children, giving them the basics at a young age. My mother inspired me to take up teaching,\u201d said Thamae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thamae is the only South African female teacher nominated for the continental event. The awards are aimed at honouring teachers for their commitment to the teaching profession as well as encouraging teachers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thamae started teaching in 2015. Innovative teaching methods include use of tools such as cartoons, videos and slides. She believes her approach improves the learning ability of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tate Makgoe, Free State MEC of Education, has congratula\u00adted Thamae for being nominated to represent the province, keeping the South African flag high and has wished her well. \u201cI believe that she stands a great chance to win.\u201d Interested teachers are encouraged to enter the 16 categories.
