The men\u2019s football side of the University of the Free State (UFS) will be looking to consolidate its position on the Varsity Football table, at the expenses<\/span> of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) side, when they meet in a fixture on Thursday (11\/08). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latter team plays host toof<\/span> this intriguing<\/span>clash of the first leg of the competition, in which eight universities partakerepresented<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teams compete on a round robin basis to determine the semifinalists. The two winners thereof,<\/span> progress to the final, to compete for the championship title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kovsies and UJ are on equal footingsimilar grounds<\/span>, they have<\/span>with six in the bag<\/span>points apiece, and are just a point adrift from current log leader, the side of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). A win will therefore propel either team to claim the top spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such a prospect will be determined by the results in matches involving the North West University (NWU), in second place, and table-topper TUT, the only team undefeated after three competition <\/span>matches played in the competition<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NWU is scheduled to take on the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), while TUT will face Wits University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Kovsies and UJ will also be looking to extend their winning streak after a 2 \u2013 1 victory over the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), as well as over Wits by 2 \u2013 0 last week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UFS is the only Free State institution in the competition after the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, failed to qualify for this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kovsies will be depending on danger man Sello Diphoko to plot the opposition\u2019s downfall. He was integral influential <\/span>against the VUT, scoring a brace to secure his team valuable points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diphoko is three goals shyine<\/span> from surpassing the record of goals scored last year. The rich vein of form he displayed last year saw him duly<\/span>awarded two prestigious accolades: the Golden Boot and FNB Varsity Football\u2019s player of the tournament title. He was chosen ahead of teammate Thabo Lesibe and counterpart Nkosinathi Sibiya of UJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diphoko can only hope to emulate last year\u2019s superb performance in this competition, set to finish on 22 September with the final<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To attain target, <\/span>Kovsies head coach, Tebogo Motsamai, is compelled to ensure his lads minimise errors against their equally determined opponents, UJ. His team\u2019s is approaching this upcoming match with a <\/span>targetin mind<\/span> is to avenge the defeat of 1 \u2013 4 at the hands of the defending champion, UJ, in last year\u2019s final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
