The closure of the Medfontein building, utilised by the Free State\u2019s Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport (CSRT), will remain so for a \u201cprolonged period\u201d. It was announced that the building will remain closed for about 30 days while a detailed report is awaited from the Free State Department of Labour on factors that need immediate attention to ensure compliance to health and safety rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On 12 May, the provincial Department of Labour shut down the building in St Andrew Street after an inspection had revealed the property was not compliant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team conducted the inspection, which found that conditions were too risky for the workers to continue rendering essential services to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team issued a prohibition notice to ensure the building becomes compliant with rules in accordance to OHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This team raised alarm regarding various issues, among which were faulty electrical wiring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The building houses approximately 130 employees, who render much-needed services to the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
