This recognition is by the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) and South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Saice). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof. Lize Theron, associate professor of Civil Engineering at the CUT, accepted the Sanral-Saice award acknowledging the programme as the best in the category for community-based projects on 13 September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is regarded as significant in advancing the development of skills and experience, while creating employment for about 650 youths since its launch in November last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is piloted in the five districts of the Free State as an intervention to improve numerous badly damaged roads, owing to government\u2019s failure to maintain infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"embed image\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"embed image\" style=\"text-align:center;\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"FS roads\" data-imageid=\"56a6daca-b55f-4c9f-a430-f8294920e6be\" data-smallsrc=\"https:\/\/cdn.24.co.za\/files\/Cms\/General\/d\/12241\/7c74527f20e84c0eb594a7e0bfdc4136.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/bloemnewsexpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/cc2e3e7a67ff4eaf8cce9f553170d375.jpg\" style=\"max-width:620px;\"><\/figure><p><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size:11.0pt;font-family:'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Some of the youth enlisted in the road maintenance pilot project of fixing several roads in Free State snapped on hands on.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is a collaboration between the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, CivilLab@CUT, the CUT\u2019s Civil Engineering department, and CUT Research Partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project\u2019s ambitious goal is to repair 70 000 m\u00b2 of road sections following strides made in the eradication of potholes and improving the conditions of roads in the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theron is optimistic that ongoing research will ensure the solutions implemented for long-term road maintenance are sustainable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe initiative invests in infrastructure and human capital, leading to improved road conditions and also a more prosperous future for all Free State residents,\u201d said Theron. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReceiving a commendation provides visibility for our university among important players in the civil engineering sector.
