Possibilities of economic growth can be set into action now that a formal agreement was reached between the Mangaung Metro Municipality (MMM) and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed at the Bram Fischer International Airport, marking a milestone in the strengthening regional collaboration and unlocking economic development opportunities in the Free State.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement establishes a framework for coordinated planning and cooperation between the two entities to advance development initiatives in and around the airport precinct, while supporting broader regional priorities, including economic growth, skills development, infrastructure development, tourism, and investment attraction.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration is aligned with the ACSA’s broader airport city and aerotropolis development priority, which seeks to leverage airport infrastructure as a driver of sustainable economic growth and integrated urban development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sello More, city manager of the MMM, said at the event on Monday 16 March that development at Bram Fischer and surrounds promises economic growth for the metro and the region.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Through the development of a logistics precinct, expanded cargo capabilities and aviation-linked industries, we are strengthening regional value chains while supporting South Africa’s broader trade corridors. This MoU with ACSA provides an important framework for collaboration as we work together to unlock investment opportunities and drive economic diversification in the region.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bram Fischer International Airport Busamed Hospital<\/a> and the Road Lodge Bloemfontein Airport was some of the previous private projects developed at the Airport Node.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Work is now being done on the bulk infrastructure with 85 housing sites and a future conference center that is in the planning. If the airport node expands, it creates opportunities for future investment in the region,”More siad.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runway upgrades are also underway at the airport.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the ACSA Faith Zwane, assistant general manager for Cluster 1 that includes the OR Tambo International Airport and Bram Fischer, pointed out the strategic importance of collaboration between aviation infrastructure providers and local government.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a critical transport and economic gateway for the province, the Bram Fischer International Airport plays an important role in facilitating connectivity between the Free State and key domestic and international markets. Through this partnership, the ACSA and MMM aim to strengthen the airport’s role as a catalyst for regional development and position the precinct as a hub for aviation-related activity, logistics, tourism and commercial investment.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More thanked the ACSA<\/a> for reaching out to the metro. He also pointed out that flights from and to Bloemfontein are very limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It should be easier to commute to Bloemfontein,” he comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the airport is under-utilised with only one coffee shop that operates at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are possibilities to create a logistics hub with cargo along with warehouses that can expand the economic activities here.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also remarked that transport from Bram Fischer to the city should be easier for visitors and residents. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
