FNB UP-Tuks cemented their position at the top of the FNB Varsity Cup standings after remaining the only unbeaten side in the competition following round three action on Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pretoria outfit survived a stern test from FNB Maties to claim a 33-17 victory, while dramatic scenes unfolded across the country as FNB UJ snatched a last-gasp victory over FNB NWU Eagles and FNB UFS Shimlas dismantled their Bloemfontein rivals in a ruthless display. Meanwhile, defending champions FNB UCT Ikey Tigers collected maximum points with a bonus-point victory over newly promoted FNB Emeris in Durban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FNB UJ 35-29 FNB NWU Eagles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Orange Army delivered a dramatic performance to edge FNB NWU 35-29 in a thrilling encounter in Johannesburg, with skipper Thabang Mphafi scoring the winning try in the dying moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FNB UJ laid the foundation in the first half, outscoring their opponents by four tries to two despite falling behind early. The visitors opened the scoring in the seventh minute through hooker Jordan Mcloughlin, but that sparked the home side into life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scrumhalf Zian Cilliers levelled matters almost immediately before Ughan Africa scored a memorable individual try, picking up a loose ball, running into traffic and bouncing off Jason Oosthuizen to extend the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cilliers grabbed his second in the 20th minute after intercepting the ball inside the Eagles’ 22-metre line, with Africa following seven minutes later to establish a commanding advantage. Luan Van der Walt scored on the half-time buzzer to reduce the deficit to 14-28 at the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half proved a completely different contest as the Eagles showed considerable fight and character. They pinned the Orange Army in their own half and forced uncharacteristic errors, with the home side compounding their problems by receiving several yellow cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flanker Ricardo Fourie took matters into his own hands, scoring three tries to give the visitors a 29-28 lead with two minutes remaining. However, FNB UJ refused to surrender and launched one final attack. The backs linked up with Mphafi, who crashed over to secure the victory much to the delight of the home crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FNB CUT 19-71 FNB UFS Shimlas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FNB UFS Shimlas claimed five points and the bragging rights after convincingly hammering their neighbours FNB CUT Ixias 71-19 in the Bloemfontein derby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two-time champions veered away from their usual blueprint, using their forwards to devastating effect and securing the victory largely through maul tries. The Shimlas’ discipline proved a textbook example throughout, while the Ixias were severely punished for their poor discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior Springbok scrumhalf Erich Visser opened the scoring following a strong maul, before hooker Jaco Bezuidenhout crashed over for a hat-trick of tries from mauls off lineouts. Flanker Ferdi Vergottini crossed twice after the Shimlas capitalised on penalties, while captain Henri van Heerden added tries during the power play to establish a commanding 42-0 half-time lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The onslaught continued after the break with the referee awarding a penalty try in the fourth minute. Vergottini completed his hat-trick in what was a rare appearance for the side before the Ixias finally got on the board through centre Winton Abrahams, who scored the first of his brace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiaan Kriek added a converted try as the Ixias began playing more expansive rugby, producing a quick double strike as Devinto Vergotine scored before Abrahams ran the length of the field for a superb point-of-origin try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Shimlas had the final say as replacement hooker Marnus Winter scored following another penalty-driven set-piece, while lock Marno Stopforth powered over for a power play try to complete the rout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FNB UP-Tuks 33-17 FNB Maties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FNB UP-Tuks delivered a commanding performance to defeat FNB Maties and remain the only unbeaten side in this year’s competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Playing in front of an electric home crowd, the Pretoria outfit combined clinical finishing with disciplined defence to overpower the Maroon Machine in a fiercely contested encounter. The result reinforces their early-season dominance and sends a strong statement to the rest of the competition as they continue to set the pace at the top of the standings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The physical clash saw the home side break the deadlock in the 21st minute after dominating the forward battle, with Jean Fourie dotting down from a powerful driving maul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visitors quickly responded and took the lead through back-to-back tries from CJ Erasmus and Ryan Manuel. Erasmus touched down from a driving maul before Manuel pierced through the Tuks defence with a clinical intercept. Flyhalf Christiaan van Heerden Smith converted both and added a penalty to hand Maties a 12-point lead at the interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Stripe Generation returned from the break rejuvenated and immediately reduced the deficit when Munashe Dukuswa slipped through the FNB Maties defence to make it 12-17. Five minutes later, Ben Jansen van Vuuren crossed over following a dominant scrum to level matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourie soon regained the lead for Tuks with his second try, again from a driving maul, before Jayd Austin wrapped up a top performance with a point-of-origin try to seal the 33-17 victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defending champions FNB UCT Ikey Tigers claimed a bonus-point victory over newly promoted FNB Emeris in their first home game in the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visitors drew first blood as Kian Davis finished off a beautifully worked move to score a point-of-origin try, with flyhalf Alex Vermeulen adding the conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Comets responded shortly after the first strategy break when star winger Edward Sigauke went over following some excellent footwork. The home team opted for a tap-in on power play but failed in their attempts, leaving the score at 5-9 to the visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defending champions extended their lead when they sent the ball wide for Lezane Davis to cross. Vermeulen added the conversion to take the score to 5-16 at half-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half saw the visitors look increasingly dangerous. A few moments before and after the second strategy break, the Ikey Tigers added two more tries through Jack Benade and Adam de Waal, with Vermeulen maintaining his perfect record from the tee with four conversions from four attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FNB Emeris tried to salvage something from the contest when replacement Thabo Njapha dotted down from a ruck after consecutive pressure from the home team, but the defending champions held on for a 32-10 victory in a highly physical encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
